Our New Years traditional meal is in the southern fashion. We love to eat black eyed peas, greens, smoked turkey legs, potatoes, and cornbread. It is a great feast, and the best part about it is that it is a one pot meal. No chopping allowed.
I use canned Mixed greens in this dish. Canned greens have much more texture than canned spinach. I was surprised myself. They have already been flavored and taste great. Do no drain your greens.
Smoked Turkey Leg with Mixed greens and black eyed peas
1 smoked Turkey leg
3-4 potatoes cut into cubes

3 cups black eyed peas
2 large cans greens (mixed, collard, or turnip)
2 t creole seasoning (you can cut back on salt and add more creole)
salt
pepper
Place potatoes and black eyed peas in a 9x13 dish. Add creole seasoning, salt, and pepper to your potatoes and peas. Add greens and stir. Create a hole and nestle your turkey let inside.
Cover and cook until turkey leg meat falls off the bone easily. Cooking slower is better, I would suggest 300 for 3 hours and check after first hour. Rather have the meal get done ahead of time than later. So put in early. If you are putting in a crock pot you will want to cook on low for 8 hours.
Serves 3-4
We usually use 2 turkey legs and 5 potatoes for the 4 of us and have some left over.
